Adopted by Mr. Lou Cetrone, Jr
The nuclear-capable Nike-Hercules was designed to address short-comings in the Nike-Ajax (e.g., the Nike-Ajax’s inability to discern individual bombers
within a densely-packed flying formation) and used many of the supporting components of the Nike-Ajax system. Site D-16 was activated at Selfridge ANG Base in 1955 with the
Nike-Ajax missile, converted to the Nike-Hercules missile in 1957 and was inactivated in 1971. Site D-16 was staffed by US Army personnel.
