The A-10 “Thunderbolt II”, affectionately known as the “Warthog”, was the first Air Force aircraft for the close air support of ground forces. The A-10A, equipped with a GAU-8/A 30mm seven-barrel cannon capable of firing 4,200 rounds per minute, was flown by the 172nd Fighter Squadron at Battle Creek ANG Base from 1990 to 2008. The 107th Fighter Squadron at Selfridge ANG Base converted from the F-16 to the A-10 in 2009.
